PADDLE BOARDERS: one person or a whole group can cover a lot of shoreline just by getting together in the evening and on the weekend. Here is what one man accomplished.... the 1st media article garnered a massive team of volunteers. A picnic at sunset cemented the team. One lake, with over 200 miles of shoreline was claimed by many paddle boarding teams on a tracking map. When the word spread through social media other friends and family volunteered, collectively cleaning 1,000's of miles of fresh and salt water shorelines. The media articles went viral spreading to Linked In, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram sharing the effectiveness around the world and the constant need to be vigilant to protect the source of 80% of our oxygen. https://www.castanet.net/news/Vernon/270316/Okanagan-Kal-lakes-are-lot-cleaner-after-lots-of-hard-work https://www.castanet.net/news/Vernon/255916/Lakes-full-of-garbage https://www.castanet.net/news/Vernon/257525/Paddling-picker-gifted-gear
PADDLE BOARDERS please note: Paddle Boarders can see and reach what Volunteers doing shoreline cleanup or monitoring can't see. Dropping a waterproof camera on a secure line into the water will show disgusting garbage... sofa's etc. A Pro Cam 4 camera under a dock shows who used styro foam illegally for buoyancy. Make note of the address and call the local By-Law office anonymously. Never approach the dock or floating dock owner ! And, if you see By Law infractions on shore follow the same procedure please, note the address and call By Law anonymously. Especially when you see discarded large plastics which the sun and rain/snow will break down into tiny pieces as they inch toward the waterway.

Our ability to measure change in the oceans—including open ocean, nearshore and coast—is increasing, not only because of improved measuring devices and scientific techniques, but also because new GIS technology is aiding us in better understanding this dynamic environment. Join us at the Canadian Oceans Forum and discover ways muli-dimensional data and web apps can help yo put scientific information to work in your organization. Consider the potential of sharing knowledge across disciplines and collaborating with multiple stakeholders. Work with the ocean GIS community as it forges new and better concepts in ocean analytics and applications towards ocean sustainability. In addtion to this, day 2 will include a hands-on-workshop where you will work with GIS technology benefiting oceans communities. Learn about collecting data, integrating and sharing with other sources, and services that help us understand the ocean.

We all use too much plastic, and inevitably a lot of it ends up in the ocean. Plastic is toxic, and as marine debris, it kills sea creatures in many different ways, including entanglement, digestive blockages, and poisoning. It also negatively impacts human health as it works its way up the food chain. We need to find creative solutions for this problem by imagining new ways to reuse and re-purpose this material. Come join Interdisciplinary PhD candidate and artist Jennifer MacLatchy and marine scientist Alexandra Vance in discussing this important issue.

The Maritime Aboriginal Peoples Council (MAPC) has developed an underwater threats activity that will be set up inside of the gazebo at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic in Halifax Nova Scotia on June 10. MAPC will be displaying various threats that marine animals face every day - fishing gear, plastic pollution, pipelines/subsea cables, decrease in prey availability, underwater noise etc. and participants will travel through these threats as they move through the exhibit. Additionally, we have two adjacent smaller activities: one that highlights the impacts of ocean acidifcation on animals with a calcium carbonate exoskeleton and another which allows participants to look through microscopes at the structure of various beach finds, such as seaweed, shells, and sand.

Plastic Ocean screening: "If it was happening in one gyre, they suspected it was happening in all of them. But the filmmakers needed experts to prove it. Scientists were brought in at each stage to analyze the findings from one part of the story to add their data to the overall report on the five gyres. In the center of the Pacific Ocean gyre researchers found more plastic than plankton. A Plastic Ocean documents the newest science, proving how plastics, once they enter the oceans, break up into small particulates that enter the food chain where they attract toxins like a magnet. These toxins are stored in seafood’s fatty tissues, and eventually consumed by us."

Ocean Art Contest
The intent of this art contest is to encourage our coastal community to think about their relationship with the ocean and what the oceans mean to them. Each art piece will be collected and displayed in an exhibit during Ocean's Week. The attending public will then vote for the best submission in each of two categories (young and mature). My hope is to award the best two pieces in each category with a prize for their submission. I am doing a call out to local elementary, middle, and high schools, as well as local artists.
