We all use too much plastic, and inevitably a lot of it ends up in the ocean. Plastic is toxic, and as marine debris, it kills sea creatures in many different ways, including entanglement, digestive blockages, and poisoning. It also negatively impacts human health as it works its way up the food chain. We need to find creative solutions for this problem by imagining new ways to reuse and re-purpose this material. Come join Interdisciplinary PhD candidate and artist Jennifer MacLatchy and marine scientist Alexandra Vance in discussing this important issue.

The Maritime Aboriginal Peoples Council (MAPC) has developed an underwater threats activity that will be set up inside of the gazebo at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic in Halifax Nova Scotia on June 10. MAPC will be displaying various threats that marine animals face every day - fishing gear, plastic pollution, pipelines/subsea cables, decrease in prey availability, underwater noise etc. and participants will travel through these threats as they move through the exhibit. Additionally, we have two adjacent smaller activities: one that highlights the impacts of ocean acidifcation on animals with a calcium carbonate exoskeleton and another which allows participants to look through microscopes at the structure of various beach finds, such as seaweed, shells, and sand.

Plastic Ocean screening: "If it was happening in one gyre, they suspected it was happening in all of them. But the filmmakers needed experts to prove it. Scientists were brought in at each stage to analyze the findings from one part of the story to add their data to the overall report on the five gyres. In the center of the Pacific Ocean gyre researchers found more plastic than plankton. A Plastic Ocean documents the newest science, proving how plastics, once they enter the oceans, break up into small particulates that enter the food chain where they attract toxins like a magnet. These toxins are stored in seafood’s fatty tissues, and eventually consumed by us."

Ocean Art Contest
The intent of this art contest is to encourage our coastal community to think about their relationship with the ocean and what the oceans mean to them. Each art piece will be collected and displayed in an exhibit during Ocean's Week. The attending public will then vote for the best submission in each of two categories (young and mature). My hope is to award the best two pieces in each category with a prize for their submission. I am doing a call out to local elementary, middle, and high schools, as well as local artists.

June 3: Nautical re-purposed Rope Wreath Making Workshop
Come re-use fishing line/rope and make a “Turks Head Knot” Wreath with Artist of White Point, Daphne of Knotty Girl Rope in West Dublin, just up the shore from us! The Turks Head Knot was used in the past by fisherman around poles, oars and masts. The knot we will be making will be flattened out which will give it a completely different look. Paired with our workshop will be a glass of Nova Scotia libation – Nova Scotia’s Tidal Bay of course carefully selected to complement our wreath AND lobster-infused munchies, of course! Daphne has been working with re-purposed rope for the past six years. As the fisherman switch out their gear, she will trade them a basket or mat for a load of the used rope, keeping it out of the landfill, and using it to make original pieces for both decorative and practical uses.

We’re proud to offer surfing here at White Point, and while our boards and wetsuits and Rossignol Surf Shop is open May – October, our surfers enjoy the Atlantic Ocean year-round. June 8th we’ll celebrate the ocean and the fun boarders enjoy on her.
Everyone is welcome – come visit, watch – and maybe even try – your hand at surfing. Bring the kids – we’d love to see families, teens, and adults out for the day. We are building an afternoon/evening filled with a tribute to all things surfing here in the UNESCO Southwest Nova Biosphere Reserve! What’s it like to surf White Point Beach? Make plans to spend the afternoon meeting and experiencing the ocean today. We’ve got a great agenda coming together, kicking off around 3pm and continuing until about 8:30pm. Spend the afternoon in & on the Atlantic Ocean!
~ Special guest, local Valley boy and Professional Nova Scotia Surfer, Logan Landry (read recent CBC article) will be on hand to demonstrate and chat about what it’s like to be from Nova Scotia and travel the world competing!
~Surf Association of Nova Scotia will be onsite and invite you to suit up and hit the waves with their instructors. And yes, getting into a wetsuit IS a sport! Sessions will be complimentary and meant to give you a taste of what it’s like to ride.
~ Meet Kite Boarder Andrew Hatfield from Yarmouth and learn about Kite Boarding, the equipment and how to get in on this new way to ride the ocean. With fingers crossed, we hope to have favourable winds so he can give us a demonstration too!
By evening, join us from 7 – 8:30/9pm for a Meet, Greet & Chat with a variety of guests!
In addition to those above, we’ll add:
~ Colin Machaffie, local photographer who captures some amazing shots of local surfers, year -round
~ Check out the works by our neighbour Surf Board Air-Brush artist Andrew Burgess
~ Meet adventurous surfers who surf here year-round!
Plus more!
BUT get ready to hit the waves yourself!
Make plans to come out for the afternoon and ‘try’ surfing for yourself, so you can truly appreciate what it takes to be a wave dancer!
Everyone is welcome to attend the afternoon and evening – it’s kinda like an Open House for the Atlantic Ocean!
We do ask that you RSVP so we know to expect you, email darlene@whitepoint.com
